Exposed - split and rusticated - ashlar stones are used to cover vertical surfaces and feature the exposed part and two split side edges, while the support surface can be both natural or sawn. They are suitable to build embankments, riverbeds, perimeter retaining walls, and road containment and are increasingly required also for the construction of public works.
